A good share of the network faults we attend are in the cabling rather than the equipment at either end of it. We repair existing Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6A installations whoever put them in, and test what we have remade before we leave.
The engineer tests from the outlet back through the patch lead, the panel and the switch port until the fault has a location. That separates a bad termination from a damaged run and from a port that has simply failed, which decides whether the repair takes minutes or a new cable.
Punched-down connections work loose, and a split pair or a wrong wiring order can carry a link at 100Mbps for years before gigabit equipment exposes it. Remaking the termination at the outlet, the patch panel or both is the commonest repair on this list.
Building work, ceiling access and rodents all take cables out. A damaged run is replaced end to end rather than jointed – a join in the middle of a permanent link will not certify, whatever it measures on the day – and we will say what the route allows before pricing it.
Faults that look like a failing switch are often patching – a lead half out of a port, a port that was never labelled correctly, or more PoE devices on a switch than its budget supports. Cabinet work includes putting the labelling back in a state the next person can read.
Anything we terminate is tested and certified to the standard the installation was built to, and the results come back with the report. A repair nobody measured is a repair nobody can prove, and on a link that only misbehaves under load that matters.
Where a fault turns out to be a run that should never have been where it is, or a desk has moved and taken the need for an outlet with it, we can install additional points on the same visit if the containment and the cabinet have room for them. Larger cabling projects are quoted separately – request a quote.
Our work covers on-site network infrastructure – cabling, switches, routers, WiFi access points and related hardware. We don’t repair your Internet Service Provider’s own equipment or connection; where a fault turns out to be with your ISP, we’ll tell you and point you back to them rather than charging to work on it.
Every van carries a full patching kit, covering most on-site faults in one visit. A managed switch, an access point that has to join an existing controller, or a fibre media converter is ordered once we’ve seen what’s installed.
Where a network is built on a vendor’s own controller or cloud platform, we can diagnose the physical layer and the hardware freely, but changing the configuration needs the login for that platform. If you don’t have it to hand, tell us when you book – it is the single most common reason a network visit can’t be finished the same day. On the call we narrow it down to whether the whole site is down, one area, or one device, which usually tells us what to bring.
